Valerie J. knows “her” machines at Ludwig Schokolade in Saarwellingen inside and out. She loves sharing her knowledge with new colleagues.
A dedicated technician
Valerie J. has more than just one favorite Ludwig Schokolade product. And as a machine operator in Saarwellingen, she ensures that all her favorites roll off the production line like clockwork.
How long have you been working at Ludwig Schokolade? And what do you do day to day?
I’ve actually been with the company for almost 25 years. It all started with a temp job from a staffing agency that quickly became a permanent position with a contract from Ludwig Schokolade. I work in production in Saarwellingen. As a machine operator, I’m essentially in charge of making sure the machine does its job and keeps producing products, such as individual bars or multipacks. We work in three shifts, and I alternate between the early shift, late shift, and night shift. It’s not always easy to work like that, but I’m happy with it.
What do you like best about your job?
Two things. First, I love working with machines and technology. Sometimes there are error messages, and we have to investigate the source of the problem—maybe some chocolate has dripped onto the conveyor belt, or maybe a sensor is dirty or some foil has gotten jammed. We can solve a lot of problems ourselves. And it’s a great feeling when we get things up and running again! Second, I love training new colleagues. I must’ve trained more than 100 so far. Seeing how cautious they are in the beginning and watching them gradually become more confident in handling the machine—it’s just fantastic. By passing on my knowledge, I feel like I’m doing something good for the company and safeguarding our production process for the future. I like that thought.

Do you prefer to work in a team or independently?
Our core team consists of four to five people, plus a relief member. Many of them have been with the company as long as I have. They’re sort of like my family. We support each other as a team, but each individual has their own responsibilities, as well. At my job, I control up to 16 metric tons of chocolate. I love the responsibility that entails!
And what happens when someone makes a mistake?
We all work together to make sure it gets fixed quickly. It’s how people learn—our newer colleagues, in particular. They might install a roll of foil incorrectly when they do it for the first time, so I’ll help them and show them how to correct the problem. They remember how to do it, and after that, it’s no longer an issue. I’m always really satisfied when I see what we’ve achieved at the end of our shift. There’s no question: this job is perfect for me!
Do you have a favorite Ludwig Schokolade product?
Just one? I have lots of favorites! I really like Edle Tropfen in Nuss, Schogetten, and biscuit-caramel bars.
